Issue

After you install the printer software and restart the computer, the following Generic Host Process for Win32 Services error message displays on the computer:

'Windows has shut down a process for Win32 services: Data Execution Prevention - Microsoft Windows To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program.'

Solution one: Update your operating system

Follow these steps to make sure that your operating system has the most current updates.

  1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start , click Control Panel, and then click Security Center.

  2. Under Resources, click Check for the latest updates from Windows Update.

  3. Click Express or Custom, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install all non-optional Windows updates.

  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Uninstall and reinstall the HP software

Follow these steps to remove, and then reinstall the HP software.

Step one: Remove the HP software with HP Uninstaller

  1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the printer and the computer (if you already connected it).

  2. Click Start (), click All Programs, click HP, click the folder for your printer, and then click Uninstall or Uninstall Software. The software uninstaller opens in a new window.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the uninstall.

    If asked to remove shared files, click No. Other programs that use these files might not work if you delete the files.

  4. When the uninstall finishes, restart the computer.

Step two: Download and reinstall the software from the HP website

note:

If you have the software CD that came with your printer, you can use the CD to check for install updates. However, the CD might not contain the latest version of the software. HP recommends you download the latest, Full Feature version of the software.

Follow these steps to download and install the latest version of the software for your printer.

  1. Turn on the printer.

  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer, if necessary. The software installation prompts you to connect the cable if needed.

  4. If you need to change the operating system, click Change, select your version, and then click Change.

  5. Under the Driver heading, click Download for the full software package, or click Basic Drivers for other driver options.

Solution three: Change the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service and Windows Firewall settings

Follow these steps to change the WIA service and Windows Firewall settings.

Step one: Change the WIA service settings

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Administrative Tools. The Administrative Tools window opens.

  2. Double-click Computer Management. The Computer Management window opens.

  3. In the left pane, click the plus (+) sign next to Services and Applications, and then click Services.

  4. In the right pane, scroll down to and right-click Windows Image Acquisition.

  5. Click Properties.

  6. In the drop-down list next to Startup Type, click Manual, and then click OK.

  7. Close the Computer Management window, and then close the Administrative Tools window.

Step two: Change the Windows Firewall settings

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Security Center. The Windows Security Center window opens.

  2. Click Windows Firewall.

  3. Click the Exceptions tab.

  4. Click Add Program, and then click Browse.

  5. Click My Computer, and then double-click Local Disk (C:).

  6. Double-click Program Files, and then double-click HP.

  7. Double-click Digital Imaging, and then double-click Bin.

  8. Click hpqtra08.exe, and then click Open.

  9. Click OK, and then click OK again.

  10. Close all open windows.

  11. Restart the computer.
